Eco- friendly wedding

When you decide to get married, you should also think of a theme, invitations, location ( tip: Sicilia!), amount of guests and many more things. You can choose for a big, expensive wedding with a lot of guests or you can choose for a more personal wedding with a small, but important group of people. You can go for detail, in for example decoration, or you can keep it more simple.

You know what is also a possibility? An ECO-FRIENDLY wedding ceremony! Eventually, the environment was, and still is, a hot topic the last few years and it definitely deserves more attention.

You don’t need to walk down the aisle in a paper dress; an eco- friendly wedding can be filled in by taking all kinds of aspects into account. You just have to be eco-friendly during your wedding- ceremony and that’s why we will share some ideas with you now:

The reception: Get married outdoors, as on a farm or in a meadow and skip the electricity or running water. There are many beautiful botanical gardens, hilltops and farms that offer modern conveniences, like sinks and toilets, so you don’t have to sacrifice these comforts. Let the sun provide all the lighting, especially when you decide to have the reception indoors. Other tips for indoor- receptions: hold your ceremony and reception in one place, so that there is no travelling or look for hotels that recycle and use energy-efficient appliances and biodegradable products. A good website with more information and suggestions for green hotels, is: GreenHotels.com

The invitation: Instead of two envelopes, one inside and one outside, opt for a single one. Take it a step further with recycled paper products. Try 100 percent recycled paper from TwistedLimbPaper.com. Some invites are even plantable- yes, plantable! Paper from companies like BotanticalPaperWorks.com are embedded with seeds. Guests can plant them in their backyards and the paper will turn into a flower, plant or herbs instead of ending up in a landfill.

The flowers: Blooms are already eco-friendly, right? Wrong! Many farmers spray flowers with chemicals to keep insects at bay. Besides this, most cut blooms come from abroad, which means  loads of fuel- use and pollution. If you have your heart set on flowers, look for ones that are VeriFlora-certified. This means that the blooms aren’t drenched in chemicals or grown under harsh working conditions. Another eco-friendly choice is to choose potted blooms or plants, which you can take back home to replant after the wedding.

The catering: As with flowers, non-organic fruits and veggies may be treated with pesticides that can harm the earth and farm workers. What can you do more to make the food more eco- friendly? Look for a caterer who uses locally grown food. If bought directly from growers, food needs less time in the fridge and less packaging to stay fresh. The result: You’ll create less trash, and less electricity and fuel has to be used.

The weddingdress: Check out vintage clothing shops for pre-worn dresses. That way, no new gowns are made and the dress that you buy gets a second wear too. If you do prefer to wear a brand-new dress, try to find a designer who uses sustainable fabrics created by nature – and not a factory – like organic cotton, silk or hemp. Lastly; your mom preserved her wedding dress for a reason! Also a possibility.
